Close collaboration between Cesaroni Design
and Kendall Healthcare product development teams created the
next generation medical device. This medical device is used
by nurses to apply compression to the lower limbs in order to
prevent deep vein thrombosis (or blood clotting).
The client's objectives were to reduce the size, weight and
cost of the current unit. Advances in electronic and mechanical
design handled by our client were critical in achieving the
project objectives.
Working closely with Kendall's medical product team, we led
the development of a range of configurations in mockup form
to evaluate human factors and potential gains for this new medical
product during focus group research.
The preferred product configuration takes advantage of internal
component improvements to consolidate space and reduce the overall
product footprint, weight and cost of the existing medical product.
Human interface improvements include an integrally molded handle
for portability, and a steel hanger coated with soft plastic
located on the back of the unit improves storage.
An overall 15% cost reduction was achieved, as well as documented
satisfaction from focus groups.
